梅耶（Antoine Meillet，1866—1936），是19世纪末20世纪初继索绪尔之后最有威望、影响最深远的法国语言学家。 1866年出生于法国木兰（Moulins）。自1877年在木兰班维尔古典中学攻读古希腊文和拉丁文，到1936年逝世这五十多年期间，研习了许多印欧系语言和方言，并先后在东方语言学院、高等研究学院以及法兰西学院等教授比较语法和各种语言。 梅耶毕生从事语言教学与研究工作，著作等身。他一生对语言研究特别是历史比较语言学的研究做出了巨大贡献，其主要著作除本书外还有：《印欧语比较研究导论》、《印欧语方言》等，在语言学史上占有重要地位。
